Flush setting (burnish setting) can be very technical and intimidating. Sayumi has developed this workshop along with the provided kit to ease the learning process for students. The two-day workshop will focus on the fundamentals of flush setting. Setting approaches and techniques will be analyzed and demonstrated. Gem identification and metal selection will be discussed as it relates to the specific setting techniques. Participants will be provided with CZs and settings (mounts), as well as materials to create their own setting tools. This workshop is for intermediate to advanced level, someone who has been working as a jeweler and has experience in basic stone setting.
students will learn bead setting technique as a continuation of flush setting workshop. In bead setting, as though cutting seat in the metal is very much similar to flush setting procedure, a graver is used to set the stone. Beading is a procedure of compressing and compacting raised metal into the form of beads, which hold the stones in the metal. During the workshop, students will also learn how to prepare their own graver in class.

The word Ma is a Japanese expression that is used extensively in descriptions of all aspects of Japanese life. It is the living breath that measures space and time in Japan. Ma is ambiguous and invisible, only experienced by sensing. It is often described as emptiness or empty space, but it is much more than just a blank space. The notion of emptiness opens to imaginative possibilities that something may enter to the invisible. It is difficult to describe this form of expression, even for Japanese, because there is no such word or concept in the English language. So how is Ma described to foreigners? In this workshop all types of space will be considered from both Eastern and Western perspectives to understand the concept of Ma. Participants will be challenged to seek new boundaries within their own practice in art through presentation, discussion and exercises.
